The Power of Awards:
Awards are a fantastic source of inspiration for your brand. If your brand has won an award, you will know exactly what I mean. If you have not won one yet, you are in for a real treat. The lift your culture receives is like a big, boisterous shot in the arm.
Awards accomplish seven things:
1. They validate to your team that they are working for a winner.
2. They are a huge source of inspiration and pride.
3. They are a magnet for attracting new team members.
4. They reinforce to your existing clients and vendors that they are connected to an organization that is steeped in values.
5. They are a magnet for attracting new clients and vendors because everyone wants to associate with a winner.
6. They distance you from your competition.
7. They are a tremendous source of PR and earned media, which builds exposure and generates attention far beyond what your marketing dollars ever could.
Over the years, I have had the honour of being involved with brands that have received dozens of local, national and international awards for culture excellence.
We have always taken a methodical approach. Most awards you are going to apply for are going be to be rooted in character vs. skill, thus, all this hard work you have done to build your character will be valuable.
How to Apply:
If you are new to the awards process or are thinking of going after new ones, here is my recommended approach.
⦁  Develop your purpose and core values and use them as the foundation of your story telling.
⦁  Become unique in all aspects of your brand and be sure you are able to articulate this uniqueness. (Adopting many of the strategies and tools I have outlined my book would be a great start.)
⦁  Get really good at getting your story out through the various social, PR and media channels.
⦁  Start by choosing some local awards.  By local, I mean your city or community. Any award is a good award because you get press from it, and with press, you get exposure. This just further enhances your brand overall.
⦁  Have the founders of your organization apply for individual awards. When senior leadership wins awards and receives public recognition, it sends the message that the     excellence for the brand starts at the top.
⦁  Once you have gained momentum on local awards then branch out to provincial/state using your local awards and stories to fuel your applications.
⦁  Once you have established yourself as a provincial/state winner, then start applying for national awards using your leaders, local and provincial/state awards plus your stories as the foundation for your application.
⦁  Once you have established yourself as a national winner, start applying for international awards using your leaders, local, provincial/state and national awards plus your stories to strengthen your application.
⦁  If you win an award, apply for it again and again. If you win it multiple times, keep applying. Consistency is huge when applying for other awards. It shows commitment.
When I reference winning an award, I am not always talking about being number one. Being a finalist, ranked in the top ten, top five, etcetera, is just as powerful if you use it creatively to tell your story.
Start local and build your momentum. It takes time, but before you know it, you will be hearing your brand’s name called at the ceremonies and the inspirational effect this will have on your culture will be immense.
